Some additional thoughts:

1. The US government actively seeks out small businesses to work with, but it's a crowded market. Relationships leading to partnerships are key here.

2. Large companies are hard to work with as well, getting past HR people is tough. Relationships are key here.

3. 100k a year could be considered decent revenue for a one man shop.

Competition = money. Be better than your competitor.
