My Boss Had It In for Me

What a total prick!

I grew up as a developer working for a small software company — the guy who owned it hand-picked every one of us.

We worked out of his basement, ate lunch together, took walks, traveled, and spent nights cranking out code and hitting milestones. We weren’t paid shit, but we were on a mission to change our little part of the world.

My boss was always on my ass; the dude totally had it in for me.

I’d been coding for almost six months and knew my way around a keyboard. I could crank out SELECT statements like I’d been doing it for years!

I’d get an assignment, sit down to think about it, draw out a basic design, think some more, grab a coffee, ask my bro what the lunch plan was, and then sit down to finish my little assignment.

Bossman would walk by my desk about that time and ask, “Where are we at?

I’d tell him I’d spent a few hours thinking about it and was just now sitting down to write the SQL.

He just wanted us to start slinging.

Don’t worry about the design, don’t worry about thinking, just do. Let the code be your design.
