I love creating software.

I got my first job as a professional programmer in the early 1990’s. It was a great time to be a programmer in the Northern Virginia area since there were a ton of commercial tech companies that set up shop around here.

13 years ago I thought getting into management would be a good idea. You know, since I’m all grown-up now and stuff like that. I’ve been paid to run teams as a Software Manager ever since.

I f’king miss writing code at work. Every. Damn. Day.

But no one in their right mind would let me near a real, mission-critical codebase anymore— unless I completely retool my skill set and take a job in another department. I considered it, but I like my office facing the river, and it’s a crazy short walk from my parking spot, and I don’t want to have to pack up all the shit in my desk and carry it down two flights of stairs.

If I’m going to get back out there and do what I love to do, completely indy, it is 100% up to me.

I look forward to starting over as a computer programmer. I like “programmer” better than “Software Engineer”.
